Restaurant insurance: protect yourself with delivery.

Delivery through platforms creates grey areas regarding responsibility. Who is responsible if a customer falls ill? If a delivery driver has an accident in front of your restaurant? If a bag is stolen? Does your insurance cover these risks?

Review your professional liability insurance policy. Most standard policies do not cover delivery activities. You need to add a specific addendum that covers incidents related to orders delivered by third parties.

Food responsibility remains yours until delivery. If a dish is contaminated in your kitchen, your insurance will be requested. Ensure that your policy covers claims related to food safety, including for delivery orders.

Platforms have their own insurance for delivery incidents (car accidents, lost packages), but it does not cover food quality issues. Do not rely on their policy to protect you.

Consult your insurance provider for an update to your policy. The additional cost is generally modest (a few hundred euros per year) and protects you against claims that can reach thousands of euros.
