The French Tacos: story of a global culinary UFO

Trends & Concepts 8 min de lecture 1 novembre 2025

French tacos have nothing to do with Mexican tacos. It’s a wheat tortilla folded, grilled, filled with meat, fries and a cheesy sauce.

The origin is disputed between the snacks of Vaulx-en-Velin (Lyon) and Grenoble at the beginning of the 2000s.

The key to success: infinite customization (meat/sauce choices), low prices for huge quantities (high calorie), and a “Greek 2.0” approach that’s cleaner and easier to eat.

O’Tacos industrialized the concept with marketing (Gigas Tacos) and franchising.

Today, it is exported (Belgium, the Maghreb, and even… to the USA under the name French Tacos).
