Pizza Hut in France: Pioneer of Fast-Casual Pizza
Pizza Hut, founded in 1958 in Wichita (Kansas) by the brothers Dan and Frank Carney, is one of the oldest pizza chains in the world. In France, its launch was early – before Domino’s – and its positioning remained distinct: a restaurant format with on-site consumption, rather than a 100% delivery model.
1986: Paris, the First French Pizza Hut
The first French Pizza Hut opened in Paris in 1986, three years before Domino’s, which established itself in Strasbourg in 1989. Pizza Hut arrived with a different approach: restaurant to eat in, family atmosphere, table service, pizza + drink + dessert formulas.
Expansion was measured:
- 1995: 30 restaurants
- 2005: 80 restaurants
- 2015: 130 restaurants
- 2024: ~150 restaurants
The Distinctive Positioning
Pizza Hut deliberately distinguished itself from other pizza chains:
1. Restaurant Format: tables, service, well-kept decor. Unlike Domino’s (delivery only) or kiosks (takeaway).
2. Family Target: ‘family pizza’ positioning, children’s menus, birthday programs.
3. Shopping Center Locations: the majority of Pizza Huts are in regional shopping centers or leisure areas, which structures their business model.
The Challenge of the 2010s-2020s
Pizza Hut France went through a difficult period between 2010 and 2020:
- Competition from Domino’s on the delivery segment (Pizza Hut attempted to compete but remains secondary)
- Competition from artisanal pizzerias on the restaurant segment (upscaling of the ‘real’ wood-fired oven, Italian ingredients)
- Difficulty in modernizing: the Pizza Hut image aged faster than that of McDonald’s or Burger King
The Digital Comeback
Starting in 2020, Pizza Hut France invested in the mobile app, online ordering, delivery via external platforms, and self-delivery, as well as takeaway with rapid pickup.
But the accumulated delay is difficult to make up for in the face of Domino’s, which has a superior brand equity and customer loyalty.
Our Scope
Our SIRENE tag database covers 12 franchised Pizza Hut companies, operating 18 declared establishments, of which 12 are open. This is a limited but representative sample of a chain that operates largely through master franchising.
Top 5 Departments
| Rank | Department | Companies Tagged |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Paris (75) | 14 |
| 2 | Hauts-de-Seine (92) | 13 |
| 3 | Val-de-Marne (94) | 10 |
| 4 | Yvelines (78) | 6 |
| 4 | Seine-Saint-Denis (93) | 6 |
The coverage is ultra-concentrated on the Île-de-France region: Paris + surrounding area represent ~80% of the tagged companies. This is consistent with a historical strategy of shopping centers in densely urban areas.
What about the future?
Pizza Hut France is today a secondary brand on its segment, dominated by Domino’s in delivery and competing with artisanal pizzerias in restaurants. The brand maintains its park but does not seem to be in an ambitious expansion phase.
