Domino's Pizza in France: 35 years since Strasbourg 1989, the conquest of delivery

Domino’s Pizza in France: The Methodical Conquest of Delivery

Founded in 1960 by Tom Monaghan in Ypsilanti (Michigan), Domino’s Pizza established itself in France at the end of the 1980s and installed a unique model: pizza delivery to the home, delivered in less than 30 minutes.

1989: Strasbourg, the First French Domino’s

The first French Domino’s Pizza store opened in Strasbourg in 1989. At that time, pizza delivery barely existed in France: traditional pizzerias did not offer delivery service, and large chains (Pizza Hut, Pizza Pino) primarily focused on dine-in consumption.

Domino’s brought a break: a model 100% oriented to delivery, with production sites often located in semi-peripheral areas (lower rent costs) and a fleet of scooter delivery drivers. The promise ‘delivered in less than 30 minutes’ became a standard.

1990-2010: The Slow Expansion

For 20 years, Domino’s France progressed moderately:

  • 1995: 50 restaurants
  • 2000: 100 restaurants
  • 2010: 220 restaurants

Competition from Pizza Hut (a more family-oriented positioning) and independent pizzerias (often perceived as having superior product quality) limited penetration. But Domino’s maintained its niche: fast and standardized pizza delivery.

2006: Acquisition by Domino’s Pizza UK

In 2006, the French master-franchisor changed: Domino’s Pizza Group plc (UK) took over French rights. This was a turning point: the British group invested massively, restructured supply, modernized restaurants, and deployed proprietary digital tools.

2010-2024: The Digital Delivery Explosion

Starting in 2010, Domino’s France accelerated:

  • 2010: 220 restaurants
  • 2015: 280 restaurants
  • 2020: 370 restaurants
  • 2024: ~480 restaurants

Digital innovation was massive: the app mobile was among the most downloaded in France (concept ‘Pizza Tracker’), voice command (Alexa, Google Assistant), customizable pizza, express delivery in dense areas.

Our SIRENE index covers 47 franchised Domino’s companies tagged, operating 79 declared establishments, of which 56 are open. This is a limited sample (~10% of the real park).

Domino’s implantation is marked in Brittany-Pays de la Loire, where the brand has particularly well taken. This area is also where pizza culture is statistically the strongest outside Ile-de-France.

The Goal: 600 Restaurants by 2030

Domino’s France has announced a goal of 600 restaurants by 2030, representing approximately 25 new openings per year.
