Natural light above all. Turn off the flash! Place your dish near a window (side light). Avoid direct sunlight which creates harsh shadows.
Composition. The rule of thirds. Don’t always center the subject. Add life: a hand holding a burger, a drink in the background, cutlery.
The angle of view. The “Top Shot” (overhead view) is perfect for tables full of food or pizzas. The profile (45°) or face is better for burgers or dishes with volume.
Culinary styling. Clean the rim of the plate. Add fresh herbs for color. Make the meat or sauce shine (a touch of brush oil).
Editing (retouching). Slightly increase brightness, contrast, and saturation. Food photos should be “appetizing” and colorful. Apps like Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed work wonders.
