Each card payment incurs fees. Interbank fees, network fees, merchant commission… it can range from 0.4% to over 1.5% depending on your contract and cards (Business, outside the Eurozone).
Negotiate your POS (Point of Sale). Traditional banks are competing with players like SumUp, Zettle, or Yavin. Compare the offers: purchase of the terminal vs. rental, fixed commission vs. variable. For high volumes, a low fixed commission plus rental is often better.
De-materialized restaurant titles (TR) take high commissions (3-4% + fixed fees). Check your CNTR statements. Encourage payment through your own app or loyalty program if possible.
Beware of hidden fees: account maintenance fees, transaction fees, overdraft fees. Make an annual review with your banker. If you are a good customer (regular transactions), you have negotiating leverage.
Cash also has a cost (management, cash register errors, theft, deposit time at the bank). Don’t underestimate it by comparing it to card processing fees.
